“The podcast breaks the myth that #mompreneurs and women business-owners are just dabbling between bake sales and getting their nails done,” said Dori.
Bonnie shared her story of how she started her own company in 2003, inspired by her mother who passed away without gaining access to available veterans benefits and in-home care. Bonnie’s story illustrates how entrepreneurs (or in Dori’s words, mompreneurs) find an unmet need in the marketplace and create a solution to meet the need.
“Most people do not want to go anywhere else. They want to age in their home,” said Bonnie.
Dori’s interview started with the why and how Bonnie started her business. Then questions centered on the unique service Veterans Home Care provides called the VetAssist Program. Dori also wanted her listeners to know who is eligible.
“The VetAssist® Program gets care started right away while helping clients apply for a non service-related disability pension from the VA. The benefit pays for assistance with activities of daily living in their homes.
So far, 18,000 seniors have used the VetAssist Program to access funds from the Veterans Benefits Administration gaining a benefit called ‘Aid and Attendance.’ ”
“Veterans wouldn’t have to have been injured during their wartime service, that is correct,” asked Dori?
“That’s correct,” said Bonnie and explained how the VBA has two major types of payments: Compensation and Pension. Compensation funds are due in cases of death or disabilities related to military service. Most people are aware of VA compensation. The pension is for those who served during wartime (or their survivors) without sustaining service-related death or injury. Combat duty and overseas service is not necessary to qualify for the VA Pension with Aid and Attendance.
The VetAssist® Program is ideal for those who want to use their VA benefits for in-home care or adult day care. If you or your loved one is a wartime veteran, check your eligibility for VetAssist and VA Aid and Attendance online, send and email to referrals@veteranshomecare.com, or call toll free 888-314-6075.
