VHC’s Dana Taylor Unpacks Aid & Attendance at CMSA National Conference
Veterans Home Care Regional Director Dana Taylor, LCSW, was thrilled to present on the VA’s Aid and Attendance benefit at the National Conference of the Case Management Society of America (CMSA). The CMSA Conference 2023 was held in Las Vegas, NV, at the end of June and gathered thousands of US social and case workers to learn about varied topics connected to their profession, as well as the newest developments, challenges, and opportunities in related care.
Taylor brings an informed perspective as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker herself. With her experience in caring for veterans and their families since 2008, she was invited to share her knowledge of the Aid and Attendance benefit as a potential elder care resource to case workers working with veterans and their spouses. She presented an overview of US veterans’ benefits and their history before covering the basics of eligibility for Aid and Attendance. Via the “3 M’s,” she emphasized that while the “military service” and “medical need” requirements are somewhat easy to understand, the “money” requirement (income and asset limits) can be tricky to navigate. Continued compliance with Aid and Attendance, once qualified, can also be complicated.
Consequently, she always advises veterans and their families to apply for Aid and Attendance via a Veterans Services Officer, or VSO, some of whom can be found in local branches of the American Legion, VFW, or AMVETS. Veteran families can also go through agencies like Veterans Home Care, which provide personalized oversight of the application and support with ongoing compliance.
