VA Home Care
You’ve heard about the Aid and Attendance Benefit for veterans requiring home care support. This is a pension that was developed following World War I, initially intended to support soldiers returning home from that war injured and disabled. It expanded through the years to include veterans of all ages, whether they served in a forward combat situation or not.
There are certain requirements that need to be met in order to qualify for this particular pension, and there are numerous firms, agencies, and other organizations all across the country advertising their support and assistance in filling out this important application.
Because the money involved can be significant, depending on how long the veteran might require support services, there are numerous unscrupulous consultants, accounting firms, and other businesses that advertise their services, often charging $10,000 or more, to essentially ‘guarantee’ approval for the veteran.
Their primary focus is helping veterans move assets around to help them fall within the threshold limits and ultimately qualify for this particular pension. They will only do that for veterans who would qualify based on other criteria, including time of service, serving during a time of active combat, and having a specific and easily documentable requirement for home care support.
While Congress is slow to act on a proposal to allow the VA to look back on a veteran’s financial records five years, as opposed to the current two-year window, this is allowing these financial firms more flexibility and brazenness to continue charging obscene amounts of money to help veterans get financial assistance from the VA for home care support.
Whether a veteran actually goes that route or not is entirely up to them, and while it may fall within the letter of the law, it’s on shady ground and is certainly unethical. Somebody who served their country with honor and pride and dignity would be remiss to consider those other options.
As for getting support in the process, where can veterans turn?
