Veteran’s Care – The Aid and Attendance Benefit may help your Senior Loved One
Your grandfather served during the Korean War and for most of your life you knew him to be a very strong and independent person. Now that you are an adult yourself, he has reached his 80s and is beginning to show signs that he is struggling to take care of himself at home. You live relatively close to him and have been providing him some support. But for veterans who require any type of home care, there are some things that you can do that can improve the quality of care for them.
The first is to determine exactly what type of support he or she requires. It may be a simple matter of assisting him with some basic housekeeping or preparing meals. He may require a little more help getting around the house. The veteran may struggle to get out of bed and get dressed in the morning, need help bathing and toileting, and a higher level of support than basic care.
If you are capable of providing these services, you want to make sure that it is not going to place a tremendous burden on your life. You also want to make sure that you know enough to provide the highest level of care for him.
If you are unsure that you can do this, you may find it frustrating trying to obtain the right options for him. This may be especially true if he or she has limited financial resources. However, if your grandfather served in the Korean War, served at least 90 days of active duty with one of those days being during a time of war, and a doctor is recommending home care for him, he may qualify for the VA Aid and Attendance Benefit.
The Aid and Attendance pension benefit program was put in place more than 60 years ago to provide assistance to veterans who require home care after their service. The pension is specifically for wartime veterans over the age of 65 who have a non-service connected disability. Surviving spouses of wartime veterans are also eligible.
The pension program, if the veteran qualifies for it, can pay for just about any type of home care he or she requires. It will even allow the veteran to pay a family member to provide at home care for him or her.
