A Special Kind of Homecoming: Veterans Home Care

Veterans Home Care Services – Assistance is Especially Important during Stroke Recovery

Mac served in the Army during the Korean War. He didn’t talk a lot about his service, even to his family members. All his adult children knew was that he saw quite a bit of combat and lost several friends during those battles. Now that he was 82 years old, he was facing a number of different battles and was going to require veteran’s home care.

The latest battle was going to involve recovering from a significant stroke that he suffered more than two months earlier. He had been hospitalized for almost a month in a coma before he managed to wake up. Doctors didn’t expect that he was going to, given his age and the significance and seriousness of the stroke. However, just like what his son had told the doctor, he did wake up because he was a born fighter.

Once he stabilized a bit, he was moved to a nursing home to receive preliminary care. He was going to require a significant level of assistance, including physical therapy, to help him make a full recovery. He was not going to be able to use the left side of his body ever again, and he was going to need to learn to communicate in a different way than he had before. This meant that he was going to require someone at his house around-the-clock assisting him. As a veteran, it was going to be difficult for him to accept the fact that he required home care, but he was an intelligent person and knew what had happened and what the stakes were.

His children contacted Veterans Home Care to find out if there was any type of financial assistance available for him to receive veteran’s home care. They learned of the Aid and Attendance pension that was available to veterans who met certain criteria.

When they began researching it, they realized that their father did in fact qualify for this level of financial assistance, because he had served at least 90 days active duty with a minimum one day during a time of war, but his disability was not service connected. He was certainly going to have a a medical form signed by a physician that listed a diagnosis that supported his need for home care.

The only other question was his finances. They looked into his finances, discussed it with a trusted financial advisor, and found out that he should qualify for this pension program. They did a lot of legwork and despite word of lengthy delays in getting approval, they managed to get the application in to the VA at around the same time he came home. It was a special kind of homecoming for Mac as well as everyone in his family.
